Most Romantic Movies of All Time

There is no better time than Valentine’s Day to revisit your favorite romantic movies. Here is our top 5 picks for Most Romantic Movies of All Time!
1. Love Story (1970)
Music aficionado Jennifer Cavalleri (Ali MacGraw) and future lawyer Oliver Barrett IV (Ryan O’Neal) are two Harvard students who fall in love despite their obviously different social backgrounds. Barrett is a wimpy rich boy and Cavalleri is a poor girl with a chip on her shoulder but when you put them together, sparks fly and witty insults are traded in the finest form. Cavalleri is eventually diagnosed with incurable cancer and the tragic ending is sure to make you weep for days. Favorite quote: “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”
2. 500 Days of Summer (2009)
This movie may not be the most chipper romantic comedy of all time, but it sure is an accurate reflection of our generation’s bitter romantic tendencies. Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel) star in this charming comedy where love ultimately does not conquer all, despite what we’ve all been told. Hansen is obsessively in love with Finn and while she plays along as the role of quirky girlfriend, her heart just isn’t in it. The ending is so out of the norm, it’s downright disappointing. This movie may not renew your shattered faith in everlasting love, but at least it reminds us that it might still be out there. Somewhere. Maybe?? Favorite quote: “Just because she’s likes the same bizzaro crap you do doesn’t mean she’s your soul mate.”
3. Titanic (1997)
Yes we know, this movie is cheesy, overrated and the girl lets her boyfriend drown in the freezing cold water instead of switching up turns on the makeshift raft but Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet almost had us convinced that there is no greater love than that of two people from complete opposite worlds who come together on a huge boat. Based on a sort of true story (yes, there was a ship called the Titanic and yes, it sunk), Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater come from two very different backgrounds but ultimately find love with each other. And then the boat sinks. It’s tragic, heartbreaking and actually a very beautiful love story, despite the obvious over-the-top cheesiness. Favorite quote: “I’m the king of the world!”
4. Pretty Woman (1990)
Giving hope to hookers everywhere, Julia Roberts stars as Vivian Ward, a street smart prostitute who doesn’t kiss on the lips in this classic romantic comedy. Richard Gere plays the sexy and successful Edward Lewis who swoops in and woos Vivian into a life of luxury while maintaining the idea that their time together has a clear expiration date. Once that expiry date hits, the hooker and the rich man realize there may be more in store for them beyond the traditional cash for sex deal and naturally, trouble ensues. Plus, no matter how many times we watch it, when Vivian verbally slams the snotty sales lady on Rodeo Drive, we women go crazy with joy. Favorite quote: “I appreciate this whole seduction thing you’ve got going on here, but let me give you a tip: I’m a sure thing. “
5. When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan (pre-botched face) star in this unconventional romantic comedy that gives us new insight into where and how love can blossom and it’s not always conventional! Though they start out as irritated enemies, Harry Burns (Crystal) and Sally Albright (Ryan) begin to form a friendship based on sharing scorned stories of their relationships gone wrong. After years of random meetings and endless conversations about everything love related, Burns and Albright begin to see each other and their relationship in a different light. This movie has a typical 1980s happy ending but frankly, it melts our heart every time. Favorite quote: “How much worse can it get than finishing dinner, having him reach over, pull a hair out of my head and start flossing with it at the table?”
