Skirts and Harem Pants: the latest in men’s fashion?

hmmanskirthmharem

Wacky runway looks infrequently make their way into the wardrobe of the average person. For example, Alexander McQueen’s McQueenadillos- although they are beautiful works of art, we’re pretty certain your mother or sister wouldn’t sport them to school/work. Perhaps that’s why we questioned H&M’s Spring collection which includes the skirt and harem pant…for men. So ladies and gents take a look here at the artistry yourself and let us know what you think. Men, would you wear ‘em? Ladies, if he wore them would you date him? We want your feedback!

I love wearing skirts and blouses

  2. By martinus on 5 December 2009

    Skirts I would wear, Harem-pants ….. I don’t think so.
Skirts were always worn by men, just in westernized cultures it was almost forgotten until now, and it’s coming up again.
Harem pants really I don’t like, there is no shape, missing a clear style, the elegance.
But I think I can learn, we’ll see.

  3. By strikemaster on 7 December 2009

I agree with Martinus, skirts are part of men’s wardrobe since were invented (about 75000 years ago), are comfortable, better for our health. I hope, skirts will be good selling, but strong advertising is demanded to inform people that there are such garments on the stock and the skirts matches with our anatomy much better than trousers. Unfortunately, these skirts arn’t available in my country (Poland, Central Europe) however I have my light casual kilts self-made of cotton, so I shall survive next summer in comfort.
I personally don’t like harem pants, so I won’t buy them.

  4. By Ghussan on 12 December 2009

Well I think the whole arguement “mens skirts have been here since forever” is fine and all, but the fact is, they were made for men. The skirt in the picture looks exactly like something a woman would wear. That would be like a man wearing lingerie, very womanly lingerie. If they come up with designs, they should make it at least so that theres a differentiation between mens designs and womans designs. Personally, I hope these skirts never work out. But that’s just me.

  5. By ericstar on 14 December 2009

Hot black school girl skirts for dudes? Why would a straight girl want to date a girly looking man? A kilt is one thing (one thing not very well accepted yet in western culture besides Scotland and perhaps Great Britain as a whole because they are used to their happy Scottish neighbors), but a straight up girl skirt… not yet. Kilts… like Braveheart said: FREEEDOOOOM!!! Skirts… Freedom from women. The other Harlem thing looks like something MC Hammer would put on. I could see them being popular in the hip-hop scene. I’m not ready for either. Got voted best dressed in high school and I’m only 23, not ready to give up my title yet with this new fashion.

  6. By strikemaster on 26 December 2009

Kilt is a skirt, it’s fact, Ericstar. BTW kilt is a part of schoolgirl’s uniform in Japan, does it mean that man in a kilt is girly-looking?
No, women didn’t wear skirts before 1850, skirts are traditional part of men’s wardrobe in European culture. Do You know that trousers were worn by women first in Ancient Greece? Skirts are manly because of history, male anatomy and comfort and dude in a skirt can look masculine (it depends of the whole outfit).

  7. By David on 31 December 2009

There IS such a thing as SKIRTS that look MASCULINE.

  8. By Skirtme on 8 January 2010

Finally some conversation in the mainstream about men able to be respected in womens clothes. Why have women been able to wear the most masculine garments, note that all womens underwear try to copy the “boyshorts” look as high fashion, but men are considered gay or wierd if they want to wear panties? Go skirts!

BTW maybe we should ask the women and not the guys! Dudes will be surprised to find out how many women like to see sexy clothes and a little less body hair on their men. Women like the way other women look!

  9. By howard on 8 January 2010

I definitely would wear skirts and tights. I would not wear harem pants.I think skirts and tights for men are sexy./

  10. By Jim on 8 January 2010

I hope skirts for men catch on. They are much more comfortable than trousers and can be attractive looking. Since skirts haven’t been an accepted part of the male wardrobe they look feminine but don’t have to be and won’t be when the become accepted. Its trend. 25 years ago a guy with earrings was wierd, today its main stream. Trends will move to skirts.

  11. By steve on 9 January 2010

What a fantastic idea. It’s about time that skirts for men became readily available and accepted everywhere – definately need some tights though – as per the model in the pics.
Mens tights have been availble for a while now, so it’s the next logical step – mens skirts.

  12. By Jess on 9 January 2010

Maybe if some manlier men would model them I could get a better picture. I’ve got to give it to Mel though… He played a good looking skirt. Interesting history on pants and skirts guys… Thanks for the facts

  13. By David on 12 January 2010

Those who do not respect men in kilts do not deserve any respect themselves.

  14. By breanne on 13 January 2010

I just wonder why women should be asked if men can wear skirts. Of course, they can, no doubts. Men do not ask or criticize what women wearing so please let men find their skirted way by themselve.
I would support it because men’s fashion is just super boring at the time, and skirts would be a wonderful option to extend. Men go skirted!

  15. By strikemaster on 19 January 2010

Breanne, maybe for the cause that some women are against?
Men’s fashion is boring? Not only, is unhealthy and restrict us to wear only trousers.
However, presented “kilt” is not a kilt, it isn’t a skirt at all. In fact it’s a skort, “comfortable” the same way as trousers are. Retailers aren’t encouraged enough to sell skirts for men.

  16. By David on 25 January 2010

The notion that skirts/kilts are not manly is a LIE! They are MUCH, MUCH more manly than pants! Also, maybe if those women who are against this fashion trend for men were THEMSELVES denied the right to wear pants, they would see what it is like to not have freedom in their clothing choices.

  17. By Breenus on 26 January 2010

Little of the discussion considers what is functional and practical. I have just returned from Myanmar where not one day did I wear pants nor underpants as instructed by the local people. The longhi or long loincloth every day. Two garments and you are dressed, longhi and shirt. Sensible, cool and great colours;different patterns for men and women. It disappoints me that so few men have the balls to wear what is sensible and are so frightened of being emasculated by their choice of clothes. And some of the women above express equally restrictive views about what ‘their’ men should wear.

  18. By David on 27 January 2010

To those women who are against men in kilts and skirts: You are JUST AS BAD as the men of 1950 who protested against WOMEN wearing PANTS!!! Didn’t THAT ever cross your mind, you sexist biggots??!! Why do you want men to look ugly??!! There is NOTHING manly about pants — they have no style in them, and are very boring!!!

  19. By Robert313 on 1 February 2010

I agree that men should wear skirts. wearing skirts doesn’t make you feminine the same as shorts doesn’t turn you into a little boy. If a male is feminine in natural mannerisms or abilities, so what he is still a man capable of fathering children, working everyday and enjoying football on sunday afternoons. He is not going to morph into a female no matter how hard he or others try to make him. Clothing has nothing to do with his mannerisms, although some transvestites try to appear that way and usually fail miserably. I am an avid supporter of men earing skirts and skorts. I also support mothers who have their sons wear them because they need to be taught how to properly wear them. I wear skirts/skorts and wear them properly. The wind is an unkind foe at times gentleman.

  20. By David on 2 February 2010

Those who believe that men who wear kilts/skirts turn into females are mentally ill and need psychiatric help.

  21. By mara on 6 February 2010

I think there is no daubt about what you said, David.
There is no doubt either that skirts fitting men, maybe better than pants can do. That might be the special aesthetic skirts have, but for sure, a skirt makes men even more manly.

  22. By Eliza on 7 February 2010

I certainly would wear the black pleated skirt. It has to be worn in the right context in order to be understood by others. It would only be accepted by the most fashion forward, and you don’t find them hanging out just anywhere.
It’s high time men had the option of a skirt! Loosen up world. It won’t take women long to love a man in a skirt.

  23. By mara on 9 February 2010

You’re right Eliza, I couldn’t believe it but no doubts – women like men in skirts. I saw it when our son was out skirted first time…. don’t want to go more detailed.

  24. By David on 11 February 2010

Whoever doesn’t believe that men should wear skirts is a traitor to America and everything it stands for. “He who denies other people equal rights HIMSELF does not deserve equal rights.”

  25. By tolemac on 13 February 2010

It’s about time that equality of the sexes is properly recognized, as men have lost their ability to express themselves in whatever clothing they choose. My desire to wear anything other than pants is based out of need due to physical problems/quirks, and I have not been able to pluck up the courage to wear anything so called female out in public. I have been sentenced for the 27 years of my adult life to wear custom made pants that really just pass as acceptable. At home I wear sarongs, never pants. I am so pleased to find online that there are many men around the world that are also fed up with the social restrictions around men’s clothing. Let’s hope that this can be busted once and for all!

  26. By Sten on 13 February 2010

I wouldn’t argue about what Americans can think about men’s skirts, I only would show them how Americann men looking in skirts and kilts. Americans are flexible….. if they have the possibility to be open and frankly.
Equal rights, of course. I think a lot is made up in the brain. I saw several men in skirts around here, but never a bad comment popped up.

  27. By Bill Schatz on 15 February 2010

Like any other piece of apparel, it depends on who’s wearing it and how it looks. Sometimes you’re hot and sometimes you’re not. The model in this black pleated skirt is hot. The skirt on him is well tailored and well proportioned. It is accented by the jacket and tights. It’s a well put together look in my opinion. The harem pants are not for me. I just don’t like the look. It has nothing to do with the name
“harem” or what that might conjure up in the mind. To be indelicate, it looks like he has a load in his pants. Again, just not for me.
A skirt is a kilt, is a skirt, is a kilt – This question has been kicking around for so long it’s ridiculous. It’s a piece of material wrapped around the waist; period. I know guys who love to wear kilts but get incensed if you should refer to them as skirts. It’s just crazy. It’s not their fault. They want to wear what they want to wear but are sensitive to what other people might say; hence the skirt vs kilt controversy. If people weren’t so quick to criticize, and look at clothing for what it is, namely protection, covering, and statement of personal style, I believe more men would pick up the trend.
The skirt is a functional garment. I happen to like the way they look, have worn them, and will wear them again. It’s sad that some men equate masculinity to blue jeans and feel that if they’re not wearing pants, then they’re not men. If you need a pair of pants to prove you’re a man, what does that say about your self image.

  28. By Diana on 22 February 2010

Skirts are okay for men. Comfortable and chic, looking better than pants on them. Just missing the people who are wearing it.
I don’t know what people thought in past when a man was wearing a skirted garment. It looks “normal”. I like to see men in skirts – just ‘refreshing’!

  29. By david on 22 February 2010

Those who believe that skirts/kilts are NOT manly have an abnormal brain. There is something wrong with them, because we’ve already PROVED that kilts/skirts ARE manly.

  30. By dagmar on 27 February 2010

Bill, you are right…. what is about self-image.
    Blue-Jeans strong men?
I just want to see men which are strong enough to wear a skirt instead pants, showing that they can combine their masculitnity with a for long time only women’s garment like women when they wore pants first time. That is courage – other’s are cowards.

  31. By cross drssing on 4 March 2010

Now I WON’T HAVE TO HIDE IN THE HOUSE WEARING WOMENS CLOTHES

  32. By strikemaster on 14 March 2010

Cross Dressing, notice that sirt are masculine, so if You want to pass as a woman, wear a pair of jeans.

  33. By skirty on 16 March 2010

Im proberly the luckyest guy in the world as I wear a skirt #t every day and have done for years, I am also married and my wife likes me in a skirt, and buys me skirts for my birthday, but when a man wears a skirt he has to wear it like a man, ie no girl y ones, I like pencil skirts or long straight ones.

One day I do believe men will be able to wear a skirt in public as do lady’s wear trousers, I have been wearing a skirt since I was 12, when I was sponsored to wear a skirt for a week and raised loads for charity and my mum was OK with me wearing a skirt at home.

Once I lived with a girl who was studying theatrical make up and dressed me as a girl for 2 weeks, that was cool.

  34. By scratcher on 18 March 2010

Wearing a skirt is liberating for a bloke; so called “modern women” seem to have abandoned them by and large as everyday wear, so why shouldn’t men adopt them for themselves.

The only barrier is perception among stereotypical alpha males: you WILL get abuse from the rugby club types, so be prepared for it….

  35. By martinus on 30 March 2010

I think the men’s-skirt wave is rolling and becoming bigger. Watch the new men’s collection for Fall/Winter 2010 and you’ll be surprised. http://www.givenchy.com/
Go to men’s fashion, fall/winter 2010, ready to wear. You’ll see more than the half of presentation are skirts for men. Men will wear tights with the skirts, skorts are also offered. That’s great….. but so far I could see, all in black.

  36. By lennyskirtandtights on 1 April 2010

I wear skirts and tights around the house, and tights always under jeans/trousers when out. Therefore I would welcome skirts and tights as men’s general fashion, as it would allow me to wear the clothes I am most comfortable with, where ever I am (indoors or out, maybe even at work). This to me feels great and can look great too.
However, I personaly would not wear Harem pants, as I feel the lack the style and elegance of the skirt and tights. In fact I would say they look unnatural, and certainly dont look as comfortable or practable as skirts and tights.

  37. By mara on 20 April 2010

I agree, harem pants looking somehow uncomfortable – I might be wrong with that. But i think that I am right saying that skirts fitting men absolutely. Looking at their body shape, a pair of pants must be a torture. Hard to believe, but nobody thought about that in past.
Definitely a HOT when talking about skirts and dresses – man-style – for men. If they like it with stockings or pantyhose, those are things which should be not discussed becuse this is everybody’s own decision.

  38. By tandkdejong@gmail.com on 20 April 2010

Kilts and skirts I would wear but Harem pants I have my doubts but that can change. I have 3 kilts and 3 sarongs and wear themall the time. However here in Alberta, Canada during the winter bare legs or anythings else bare is not reccommended as our temperatures go well below 25 degrees celcius which is to cold to be outside in the first place. I hope that more guys would come around and wear kilts or skirts but they have to be fitting in style and design, not any fancy colors until society is comfortable with us guys in kilts or skirts.

  39. By mara on 29 April 2010

Sometime checking the malefashion HOT’s and developments – oh my gosh, there are designers talking about HOT male fashion! There isn’t any HOT, this stuff for guys is burning since 200 years with little change, because there is no way out the sexualized cloth-/dressing forms.
And there are a lot of people calling that HOT. I don’t know what is their understanding about creativity, innovation and flexiblity. Or even the word “HOT”, do they know what does it mean?

Everybody has an own taste, but H&M showing that male can change like going to see the reality of the “NEW MALE”!
Comfortable clothes like skirts or dresses for are just one way, now we can see [perhaps] a positive change.

  40. By chrissi on 1 May 2010

Skirts are originally a male’s garment but commonly used only by women in different styles the past 200 years in western societies.
Let men go back to their wardrobe and let’s try to de-sexualize clothes. If this goes well, then we can enjoy men in skirts much more.

  41. By Louise on 14 May 2010

I don’t like harem pants, but skirts looking great on men.
Skirted garments simply allow a comfort and freedom that can not be achieved with trousers or shorts, particularly when seated for long periods. Whether sitting at a desk all day or stuck in the cattle class seats of an aeroplane a skirt is vastly more comfortable than having a restrictive in-seam cutting into the undercarriage.
So, why men are waiting – waiting for what? Skirts is the future for guys.

  42. By DONALD KASKEVIC on 18 May 2010

I LIKE HAREM PANTS THE ONES THAT ARE NOT BAGGY AND I ALSO LIKE SKIRTS SO WHERE CAN I GET THEM.

  43. By herby on 22 May 2010

Donald, you can get men’s skirts online or in H&M stores but only in fashionable areas like New York, SF, LA.
I got my skirts in Nordstrom and Macy stores. Try it on before buying.

  44. By John H. on 23 May 2010

Instead of yakking about wearing skirts and not doing it, JUST DO IT!!! I converted three jeans into jean skirts, and I have three denim skirts that I ordered from OneStopPlus.com – Vintage Denim Skirts. They have 5 pockets and are knee length. I wear them publicly all the time.

I do agree with Ghussan about the feminine appearance of the skirts in the picture above. Designs like those really discourage men from wearing skirts. A much better idea I believe would be to have skirts coordinated with normal business suit jackets so there would be a business suit alternative with a skirt instead of pants.

  45. By strikemaster on 28 May 2010

Of course, first place wehere men’s skirts catch on will be formal bussines suit. :)
No, corporations won’t agree for the skirted male emploee for long time.
Also notice it is not a skirt nut skort. I don’t know what for they decided to resign from the main argument convincing men to wear skirts – comfort? Maybe they (H&M) don’t want to popularize skirts for men but want to get to papers?
“Just do it” depends of the social enviroment You live. In some areas wearing skirt by men is almost a suicide.

  46. By Dave H on 28 May 2010

Over the last 100 years women’s life has changed out of all recognition, most of it with the help of men. As men we need to get our freedom, which includes freedom to wear skirts. But were men helped women, I see little help from women, in fact very much the opposite, most (but not all) want to keep their female privileges and that includes the skirt. It may be surprising, but true, that the fight by men to reclaim the skirt has been going on for over 100 years.

  47. By John H on 31 May 2010

When I say I wear skirts publicly, I mean that I go to stores and even to my church’s choir practice. One time the only person wearing the skirt was myself, and another time I was the only man in the choir (as a bass).

It is really amusing when I had to get an item for my wife at Sally’s Beauty Supply I was the only person in the store wearing a skirt.

I agree some people need some education. There was a man at the church who disapproved, and I need to talk to him in kindness about how a man should feel free to wear a skirt.

  48. By John H on 5 June 2010

Concerning Dave H and his remark of men fighting to reclaim the skirt: At the same choir practice a couple of women came up to me and admired my courage to wear a skirt.

We men have not been putting much of a fight at all. We as a group simply meekly go along with the status quo instead of putting up a good fight that women asserted to win the right to wear pants.

As far as business suits with skirts – I suspect that if the general dress code is relaxed enough (e.g., blue jeans) some companies may allow skirts with business suits for positions not exposed to the general public.

  49. By Dave H on 7 June 2010

We men may not be putting up the sort of fight that perhaps women put up. But then women have gained rights with the backing of men. Whilst I agree that there are some women who support us and indeed a small minority who’s aim it is to get men is skirts, there are also a lot that are totally against the idea.

Women hold far more power than people think; they have been deciding what men wear from cradle to grave for a long time, which is one reason why men’s clothing is so dull. Although I have had some good responses to wearing a skirt, I have had more negative responses from women than men. Such responses (leaving out the rude ones):-

    >>‘Any man who so much as wears a pair of sox from a woman’s department is a transvestite’

And on asking the question if it is OK to wear a skirt designed and sold as men’s?

    >>‘No they are for women not men, it’s just a marketing ploy’

I have had more positive attention form women whilst skirted than not. But also some bad experiences, none of which came from men.

  50. By John H on 8 June 2010

    Dave,

The negative comments are the price one has to pay when one stretches the envelope. I for one am willing to stretch the envelope. Very few women in the Dallas, Texas area wear skirts on a daily basis. In fact I have seen only two other people wearing denim skirts besides myself. Meanwhile, some men wear droopy basketball shorts and flowery pants with drawstrings. So when I wear a denim skirt (knee-length) it is not viewed as being much different from shorts. There is not so much the feminine association with the skirts since so few women wear them.

  51. By Andy on 24 February 2011

Harem pants looking just ugly. Skirts are okay for men. It is the way how men wear and carry it which makes them more fashionable.

  52. By Breanna on 16 April 2011

I agree, Harempants looking awful on men. Give them proper men-skirts instead.

  53. By xena on 15 January 2012

wear them all the time especially running skorts with black tights looks great
