GUYS:
I don’t know what it is about sending girls gifts online, but for some odd reason, it’s just NOT the same as buying a random girl on the street flowers. I promise you: you know that cutie in the business suit, with the sexy legs that you see on your way to work, whom you fantasize about, but you never spoke a word to? If you bought her flowers, and introduced yourself, saying “I have been watching you for days now, you are so beautiful”, you’d be lucky if she didn’t call you a creep and file a restraining order on you.
On the other hand, there is some sort of crazy loophole in the laws of dating that makes virtual gifts the EXACT opposite. Giving a cute stranger a pair of “Virtual Handcuffs”, a “Dinner for Two”, or a “Valentines Day Cheesecake” (yum!) is a PERFECT ice breaker. For the “Valentines Day Cheesecake” gift; you can start teasing her about how thin she is, and how you had to send her a virtual cheesecake, as opposed to a real one… (you’re looking out for her). For the “Date for Two” gift; you can later mention that you already paid for the 1st date, therefore the next one’s on her (evil smirk). And with the “Handcuffs”; you can assure her that the handcuffs are for keeping her at a distance from you (you’re just so irresistible). THERE ARE LIMITLESS POSSIBILITIES FOR FUN! Flirt away guys, and remember to be yourself, don’t put up a front, and have fun. I recommend you take advantage of the Valentines Day gifts while they’re available, and give a super romantic Apres Amour to the special hottie you’ve had your eye on… I know I will.

Um, yeah… I have a bone to pick with you. Guys giving virtual gifts to a chick is hot – and a great way to break the ice, yes. But what about a girl giving virtual gifts to a hot guy she’s interested in? I know what you girls are thinking: “I don’t want him to think I’m too aggressive!” or “It’s a man’s job to pursue the woman.” Listen: it’s 2009 – people are supposed to be flying around in Jetson cars. If you’re matched with a good guy, he can tell the crazies from the far-and-few between amazing women, who will both show him affection, convey her appreciation, amaze him with her originality & authenticity, and yes, not get over-obsessed. It’s been a few short days since we launched the HOT or NOT iPhone App and already iTunes lists it as the #4 Social Networking app. w00t!
That’s behind Facebook, MySpace and AIM. Just you wait AOL, we’re coming after YOU!
We’ve been thrilled with the response. We’ve even had to add more moderators to get all your profiles approved at our usual lighting-quick rate of 10-15 minutes.
iPhone photos are starting to pepper the site, especially in some regions of the country and even the world. Like France! We had no idea you were so iPhone crazy. Alors, bonjour mes frères!

It’s a silly little thing, but… you know your double match list on your dashboard?
For the longest time it’s shown a random set of people. Each time you refresh your dashboard you’d see a different set of your matches.
We had a few people suggest that it might make more sense to show your NEWEST matches.
So that’s what we did.

Update May 26, 2009: We’re happy to announce that we’ve completely revamped the chat service and it’s now enabled across the site.
Update Jan 26, 2009: We’ve run a two week trial and got a mixed review. Most of you loved it. However, some people found it slowed down their browsers. We have turned it off until we get to the bottom of exactly which browser/operating system combinations it is, and how to fix it.
Hey everyone! We launched a trial of a new chat system about 48 hours ago. If you tell us you like it, it’ll replace our old chat system. So far y’all have sent 100,000 messages in the new system.
The old chat system is clunky, standalone, and not well-loved by anyone we talked to. The new chat is built into the bottom of every page of HOT or NOT. This means that everyone in the system is now chattable, rather than the small population who cared to open the old one.

What’s so great about the new chat?
- Many more people to chat with because everyone that’s on HOT or NOT is on chat
- Easily see who’s available for chatting
- Chat with multiple people at once
- Simpler, easier to use
- You get immediate notification when people want to chat with you regardless of what page you’re on — you don’t have to open a separate chat window anymore!
There’s a feedback button built into the new chat bar. You guys have been using it with abandon. We’ve been listening to it all and have been rolling out several releases a day with changes based on that feedback.
The top things currently on our list:
- Off Button. Make it painfully obvious how to turn the thing off. There’s a way right now, we keep making it more obvious, apparently we need to go further.
- Performance. We’ve already improved performance a lot, and our tools show page load times are good, but we still get some complaints that it’s slowing down page load. We will keep improving.
- Separate Window. Some of you want chat, but not in the HOT or NOT pages. We’re making a way to pop it out.

Everyone sees the chat bar at the bottom of their screen.
Can I use the OLD chat?
Yes. The old chat works the same as before.
Does new chat talk to old chat?
No. They are two separate systems.
Can I turn it off?
Yes. Click the little green dot at the right corner of the chat bar.
Can I stop others from contacting me?
Yes. Click the little green dot at the right corner of the chat bar. There’s an option to “go offline”. Just like in the IM world, that means you can initiate conversations but other people don’t see you in their list of available chatters.

Alright, guys. Check it out. From now on, I will be writing a weekly newsletter; interviewing men and women, and giving you guys the down and dirty details on how to meet women on HOT or NOT.

A little about me: I am a veteran here, on HOT or NOT. I first started using the site in December 2005. Since then, I’ve met some long term girlfriends, and created tons of everlasting memories. I loved the site so much, I got a job here!
So here I am, at your disposal to help you make the most of HOT or NOT… Lets start off with the basics: First, you’re here to meet women. Whether you are looking for a one night stand, or your soul mate, the reason you took the time to sign up for HOT or NOT, is strictly to meet women. If you claim otherwise, you are lying to yourself!
So here is your homework for this week: try these 5 tips to making the most of your HOT or NOT experience. Use them, and you should have a date by the end of the month. I strongly urge you to write in with your success stories, questions & comments.
1. Create a list of 3 things you want to convey to the women you message. Remember that you want to convey a high amount of value, so put your best foot forward!
2. Yes, creating an opening copy/paste message is great, because it allows you to convey yourself and save time. Still, any educated human being can sniff out a mass-message. Include some of her keywords in your message. Ask her why she has Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a keyword. Tell her she’s cool for having the UFC on her Hotlist!
3. Make her laugh. (with you, not at you…)
4. Don’t be needy! Look, if you come across as a guy who has cobwebs in his condom drawer, and his mom and family doctor on speed dial, you’re up for review to be deleted, very soon.
5. Keep your initial message SHORT! Look, you don’t know her, she could be a complete lunatic! Quit acting like she’s the prize. When she finally starts to catch your attention with her words, instead of her pic, then start writing more. Plus, this weeds out the ‘crazies’.

Happy 2009, and Welcome to the OFFICIAL HOT or NOT blog!
Over the years, many of HOT or NOT’s loyal users and fans have asked for a place to check in on what’s happening and gain insight on what’s to come for the HOT or NOT community. They’ve also requested a place to give us feedback on new (and old) features and to suggest new ideas, services and features that they’d love to see become part of the HOT or NOT experience.
So, to kick off 2009, we’ve launched this blog – the first forum sponsored by and focused exclusively on HOT or NOT.
Posts will be written by members of the HOT or NOT team, and updated regularly. As we continue to invest in HOT or NOT, by rebuilding and extending HOT or NOT’s systems and products to better serve you, our customers, we hope you find this to be a valuable place to share your feedback with us regularly – the good, the bad and the ugly.
